Cat Feeding Guide: From Kittens to Seniors

From novice cat owner to veteran pet parent, it’s okay to be stumped sometimes on how much or how little to feed your pet. Whether you just adopted a brand new kitten or are caring for a senior cat, getting your cat’s feeding routine down is one of the best things you can do for their overall health and wellness. We’re here to help break down feeding schedules, portion sizes and helpful tips tailored to cats of all ages.

Feeding Kittens

Kittens have high energy needs and tiny stomachs, which means they need to eat more frequently than adult cats. They grow fast, so it’s important for them to get optimal nutrition for healthy growth.

  • Age 0–6 months: Feed 3–4 times a day.
  • Portion size: Follow the feeding guide on your kitten food label, adjusting based on your vet’s advice and your kitten’s weight gain. See the estimated amounts for Dr. Elsey’s cleanprotein kibble and pate below.

Feeding Adult Cats

Once your cat reaches about 1 year old, it’s time to transition to an adult feeding schedule. Routine and balance are essential to keeping your cat’s day-to-day low-stress and consistent. If your cat is overweight, it may benefit from being fed smaller portions throughout the day rather than one or two meal times per day to help curb their appetite. Instead of leaving a larger amount of food down for them to eat throughout the day, give portioned amounts of food multiple times a day at regular feeding times.

  • Ages 1-7 years: Typically 2 meals a day (morning and evening).
  • Portion size: Use the feeding guide on the label as a baseline, but adjust based on your cat’s activity level, weight and health.

Feeding Senior Cats

Older cats (around age 7 and up) may need fewer calories and might benefit from food that supports joint health and digestion. Some cats over 10 years of age may suffer from weight loss and require more protein and calories. Very old cats,  just like very old people, often have muscle wasting. These cats need as much high-protein food as they will eat. Regular checkups can help catch any age-related changes in dietary needs early.

  • Age 7 + years: 2 smaller meals a day, or smaller more frequent meals if needed.
  • Portion size: Adjust according to your vet’s recommendations — senior cats can gain or lose weight more easily.

Feeding Tips for All Cats

  • Fresh water is essential for all cats — make sure to keep a bowl of clean water next to their food or even add a little to their food for extra hydration.
  • Try to use a measuring cup when feeding your pets — eyeballing food portions can oftentimes lead to over or under feeding.
  • Cat food that is high in carbohydrates leads to obesity and higher risk for health conditions such as fatty liver syndrome and diabetes — stick to a high protein food option like Dr. Elsey’s cleanprotein to reduce trips to the vet.
  • If your cat struggles with obesity or boredom, try investing in a food puzzle for them. Place dry kibble into a plastic ball with holes, or other puzzle toys, to engage your pet and fuel their natural hunting instincts.
  • Cats are very texture-oriented animals. The Dr. Elsey’s cleanprotein line offers kibble, pate and homestyle pouches to align with your cat’s preferred food texture. Try out different types to see what your cat prefers.
  • Keep an eye on your cat’s body condition and behavior. If you notice anything abnormal, they may need a diet change. Consult with your vet if you have any concerns.
  • Stay consistent with their feeding schedules — cats love consistency!
